Mindfulness & Meditation Practices

Mindful Eating Practice

The exercise of mindfully eating a raisin or a piece of chocolate is a staple of mindfulness education, and is a great activity for kids. This is a fun way to teach children to pay attention to and savor their food, and by extension, the present moment.

Loving Kindness Meditation

Begin by sitting comfortably and place your hands on your knees, palms up. Gently close your eyes and bring to mind someone who is loving and kind. It may be a parent, a grandparent, a friend, or even a pet. It may make you smile just thinking how loving and kind they are. Let that feeling of love and kindness fill your body. Breathe in, and breath out. While you are thinking of this person begin to send them good wishes from your heart.

Sa Ta Na Ma Meditation

“Sa Ta Na Ma” means Truth Is My Name. This practice has the added benefit of developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Younger children and beginners may need to watch their fingers touch at first.

Walking & Listening Bell Meditation

Walking Meditation is a kind of meditation that involves focusing our attention and breath on the repetitive movement of each step we take. It is especially helpful when we feel too energetic for a seated meditation and our body is requiring movement from us. A walking meditation works well with children and can be used during transitions from place to place.
